Johannesburg| 22 April 2026|:The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has officially confirmed the grant payment schedule for May 2026, providing more than 18 million beneficiaries across the country with critical certainty ahead of the month.
Payments will be staggered across three consecutive business days in the first week of May, following the agency’s established framework designed to prevent overcrowding at pay points, ATMs, and retail payment outlets.
For millions of households, the SASSA payment calendar shapes daily financial planning — from grocery purchases and school transport to medical expenses.
The May schedule is particularly significant as it is the second month under the revised 2026/2027 grant amounts, which came into effect in April 2026 following the government’s annual cost-of-living adjustments.
Official Payment Schedule for May 2026
According to SASSA’s confirmed 2026/2027 financial year schedule, the May payment dates are as follows:
| Grant Type | Payment Date | Day |
| Older Persons Grant | 5 May 2026 | Tuesday |
| Disability Grant | 6 May 2026 | Wednesday |
| Children’s Grants | 7 May 2026 | Thursday |
| SRD R370 Grant | 21–31 May 2026 | Batch payments |
The Older Persons Grant will be the first to be disbursed on Tuesday, 5 May 2026, followed by the Disability Grant on Wednesday, 6 May, and all Children’s Grants on Thursday, 7 May.
Beneficiaries receiving the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) R370 grant should expect their payments to be processed in batches between 21 and 31 May 2026.
| “The general principle for determining the grant payment dates for social grants is to ensure they are paid as early in the month as possible, staggered over three days.”

How Payment Dates Are Determined
SASSA’s scheduling follows a defined operational framework governed by several key rules. Payments are not made on the first of the month or on a Monday.
Disbursements cannot fall on a weekend or a public holiday, and payments are not processed the day immediately after a public holiday.
South Africa’s Workers’ Day public holiday falls on 1 May 2026 — a Friday — but SASSA confirmed that this does not affect the May schedule, as payments are set to commence on Tuesday, 5 May.
Where a scheduled payment date does coincide with a weekend or public holiday in future months, the agency confirmed disbursements automatically shift to the next available working day.
Updated Grant Amounts for May 2026
Grant values for May 2026 reflect the increases announced as part of the 2026/2027 budget.
The adjustments represent the government’s annual cost-of-living response, though advocacy groups have raised concerns that increments remain insufficient relative to food price inflation and rising transport costs.
| Grant | Monthly Amount | Increase |
| Older Persons Grant (60–74) | R2,400 | +R80 |
| Older Persons Grant (75+) | R2,420 | +R80 |
| Disability Grant | R2,400 | +R80 |
| Care Dependency Grant | R2,400 | +R80 |
| War Veterans Grant | R2,420 | +R80 |
| Foster Child Grant | R1,290 | +R40 |
| Child Support Grant | R580 | +R20 |
| Grant-in-Aid | R580 | +R20 |
| SRD R370 Grant | R370 | Unchanged |
The Older Persons Grant, Disability Grant, and Care Dependency Grant each increased by R80 to R2,400 per month. The War Veterans Grant similarly rose by R80, to R2,420.
The Foster Child Grant increased by R40 to R1,290, while both the Child Support Grant and the Grant-in-Aid rose by R20 each to R580 per month. The SRD R370 grant remains unchanged at R370.
| “These increases come at a time when many households are still battling high food costs, transport expenses, and unemployment. In thousands of homes, one grant supports several people.”

Urgent Warning: e-Life Certification
Alongside the payment schedule announcement, SASSA issued an urgent advisory to all beneficiaries: those who have not yet completed their annual e-life certification risk having their May 2026 payments disrupted or suspended.
The e-life certification is a digital verification process that confirms a beneficiary is still alive and eligible to receive their grant.
SASSA has been progressively rolling out the system to replace manual life certificate submissions.
Beneficiaries who fail to complete the certification before the payment processing cutoff may find their grant withheld pending verification.
| What Beneficiaries Should Do Before May 2026 Payments
• Confirm your e-life certification is up to date via the SASSA online portal at sassa.gov.za • SRD R370 grant recipients should check approval status at srd.sassa.gov.za using their ID and cellphone number • Verify your banking details are current — incorrect details are a leading cause of payment failure • Do not rush to ATMs or pay points on the first payment day — funds remain in your account after the release date • Report any payment issues, card theft, or loss immediately to SASSA on 0800 60 10 11 |
Practical Guidance for Beneficiaries
SASSA has consistently encouraged grant recipients not to crowd payment points or ATMs on the first day of disbursement.
Once funds are released, they remain available in the beneficiary’s account and can be accessed at any subsequent time.
Waiting two to three days after the payment date allows queues at ATMs, Shoprite, Pick n Pay, Boxer, and other payment points to subside.
Beneficiaries are advised to use ATMs in well-lit and secure locations, preferably with a trusted companion when withdrawing larger amounts. All payment cards and PINs should be kept secure.
SASSA also cautioned the public that the agency will never request a PIN, password, or banking details via SMS. Any such message should be treated as fraudulent and reported to SASSA immediately on 0800 601 011.
For SRD R370 grant recipients who were affected by previously reported technical difficulties on the self-service portal, SASSA confirmed the portal has been restored and beneficiaries can check their payment status online.
Contact and Support Channels
Beneficiaries who experience payment problems, delays, or account issues are urged to contact SASSA directly rather than rely on unofficial third-party websites or social media posts, which may carry outdated or incorrect information.
The official SASSA toll-free helpline is 0800 60 10 11. Online status checks for SRD grants can be conducted at srd.sassa.gov.za.
