Yusen Logistics Expands into East Africa with Strategic Kenyan Joint Venture

Money & Market

Global logistics leader Yusen Logistics has officially entered the African market through a strategic joint venture with AGL Kenya Limited, a subsidiary of Africa Global Logistics (AGL).

The new company, Yusen Africa (East Africa) Limited, is headquartered in Nairobi and aims to serve as a gateway for regional trade across East Africa.

The joint venture combines Yusen’s global expertise in freight forwarding, multimodal transport, project logistics, contract logistics, and cold‑chain solutions with AGL’s deep knowledge of the African logistics landscape.

The collaboration positions the company to provide integrated supply chain solutions across the region, from ports to inland distribution networks.

Africa represents a key growth market for global supply chains,” said Hiroyuki Okamoto, President and COO of Yusen Logistics Global Management.

“By partnering with AGL, we are leveraging local expertise and infrastructure to deliver world-class logistics services and help businesses scale efficiently across East Africa.”

Kenya was chosen as the hub for its strategic location on regional trade corridors, connecting major East African markets and offering access to the Indian Ocean ports.

The venture is expected to enhance freight efficiency, reduce transit times, and improve supply chain visibility for businesses operating in the region.

Eric Melet, CEO of AGL International Logistics & Railways, added, “This partnership strengthens the logistics ecosystem in East Africa.

Companies in sectors like manufacturing, e‑commerce, healthcare, and agriculture will benefit from more reliable, technology-driven logistics solutions.”

Analysts note that the expansion reflects broader trends of global logistics firms seeking a foothold in Africa, responding to the growing demand for efficient supply chains driven by rising trade volumes, infrastructure investment, and the region’s economic growth.

Yusen Africa (East Africa) Limited is now operational in Nairobi, providing freight forwarding, multimodal transport, customs brokerage, contract logistics, cold‑chain services, and e-commerce support.

The venture marks a milestone in the company’s global expansion strategy, strengthening its presence on the African continent.
