Container ships play a huge role in transporting cargo. In this article we look at the world largest container ships:

HMM Algeciras

The HMM Algeciras is the first of a series of twelve identical vessels. With a length of 400 metres and a capacity of 23,964 TEU, she and her sisters are currently one of the largest ships in the world.

The shipping company had ordered the construction of seven and five ships respectively from the shipyards DSMI (Daewoo Shipping & Marine Engineering’s Okpo) and SHI (Samsung Heavy Industries).

The series belongs to the so-called Megamax-24 container vessels. The number 24 refers to the number of containers that can be placed next to each other across the width of the ship. In height, twelve layers can be stacked below deck and another twelve above deck. As with most megacarriers, the deckhouse is located far forward to give the ship’s command a better view to the front.

MSC Irina

MSC Irina was built in 2023 and put into service the same year. The ship is sailing under the flag of Liberia. It is the first of six ships that will be built by the Chinese Jiangsu Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Group.

OOCL Spain

Capable of carrying up to 24,188 twenty-foot container boxes, and having a total length of 399.99 meters and a width of 61.3 meters, the OOCL Spain was built by Nantong COSCO KHI Ship Engineering Co., Ltd.   This scale makes her not only the first of OOCL’s vessels to exceed the 24,000 TEU threshold, but also places her among the very largest container ships in the world (as measured by carrying capacity).

MSC Tessa

MSC Tessa has a container capacity of 24,116 TEUs and is the first of four same-size container ships purchased by the largest container line in the world.

According to Hudong-Zhonghua, a unit of China State Shipbuilding Corp (CSSC), the vessel is currently the world’s largest boxship in terms of TEU capacity.

The mega container vessel measures 399.99 metres in length and 61.5 metres in width.

Ever Alot

Ever Alot is a container ship as of 2022 the biggest container ships worldwide by both TEU and gross tonnage. The ship was launched in June 2022. She is 62 metres (203 ft 5 in) wide and 400 metres (1,312 ft 4 in) long. The ship has a capacity of 24,004 containers (24,004 TEU). Ever Alot is operated by the Evergreen Marine Corporation. The ship sails under the flag of Panama

Ever Ace

With a capacity of almost 24,000 TEU, the Megamax container ship Ever Ace is currently one of the world’ s biggest container ships. With 24 rows of side-by-side containers, it measures 61.5 metres in width. The ship was built by Samsung Heavy Industries in Koje Island in South Korea. The main engine is a two-stroke Wärtsila engine with 11 cylinders. With its 70950 kilowatts, the ship accelerates to a cruising speed of 22.6 knots.

MSC Loreto

MSC LORETO (IMO: 9934735) is a Container Ship that was built in 2023 (newbuilding) and is sailing under the flag of Liberia. Her carrying capacity is 24000 TEU and her current draught is reported to be 14.5 meters. Her length overall (LOA) is 399.99 meters and her width is 61.33 meters.
