Thousands of South Africans expecting their social grant payments this week faced unexpected delays due to the South African Social Security Agency’s (SASSA) newly implemented biometric verification process.
The agency confirmed that the delays stem from a security measure introduced to verify the identities of certain beneficiaries using fingerprint and facial recognition technology.
The rollout, which began this month, primarily affects grant recipients whose identity documentation or personal information requires further validation.
“We are introducing biometric identity verification to protect the integrity of the grant system and to ensure that payments are made to the right individuals,” said SASSA spokesperson Paseka Letsatsi in a public statement on May 5.
Who Is Affected?
According to SASSA, the biometric verification requirement currently applies to beneficiaries who:

Do not use the standard 13-digit South African ID number,

Have inconsistencies in their personal information,

Or are flagged for manual review due to suspected irregularities.
The agency noted that the initiative is part of a broader fraud-prevention strategy following reports of identity theft and duplicate applications.
Required Action
SASSA has urged affected beneficiaries to visit their nearest local offices for in-person verification.
“Beneficiaries are required to bring their original ID documents and complete the biometric scanning process,” said Letsatsi. “Once verified, payments will resume promptly.”
The agency has also stated that no new grant applications will be processed without biometric confirmation going forward.
Public Response and Challenges
While the move is intended to enhance the accuracy and security of grant disbursement, it has caused concern among beneficiaries, many of whom rely on these funds for basic living expenses.
“I waited in line for hours only to be told I must come back with more documents,” said Sibongile Ndlovu, a 67-year-old pensioner from Soweto. “They didn’t tell us ahead of time that we needed to do this.”
Several civil society organizations have called on SASSA to improve communication and provide transport assistance to vulnerable recipients, especially the elderly and people with disabilities.
