Walmart Canada Unveils Bold $6.5B Expansion Plan: New Stores, Supercentres, and Advanced Distribution Hubs by 2027

In a significant move to enhance its presence across the country, Walmart Canada has announced an ambitious investment of $6.5 billion CAD (approximately $4.5 billion USD) over the next five years.

This strategic initiative aims to accelerate growth through the opening of new stores, including several Supercentres, and the modernization of its distribution network.

A Commitment to Growth

The expansion plan includes the launch of dozens of new stores, with an emphasis on Supercentres that offer a wide range of grocery and general merchandise under one roof. Among the highlights of this initiative are:

  • New Supercentres: Walmart Canada is set to open five new Supercentres in Ontario and Alberta by 2027. Notable locations include:
    • The Port Credit Walmart Supercentre in Mississauga, scheduled to open in summer 2025.
    • The Oakville Walmart Supercentre at Hopedale Mall, expected to launch in late 2025.
    • Additional Supercentres planned for Calgary, Edmonton, and Fort McMurray in Alberta.

Modernizing Supply Chain Infrastructure

In tandem with new store openings, Walmart Canada is investing heavily in its supply chain infrastructure. A state-of-the-art distribution center is set to open in Vaughan, Ontario, in spring 2025. This facility will be the most advanced in the company’s Canadian operations, designed to streamline logistics and improve product availability for customers.

Building on Previous Investments

This latest investment follows a previous commitment of $3.5 billion CAD made in 2020, which focused on modernizing over 180 stores and enhancing the distribution network. The cumulative effort reflects Walmart Canada’s dedication to adapting to evolving consumer needs while maintaining a competitive edge in the retail landscape.

Meeting Diverse Customer Needs

Joe Schrauder, Chief Operations Officer at Walmart Canada, stated that this expansion is about more than just numbers; it’s about being relevant to a diverse customer base. “We are committed to serving Canadians from all walks of life—whether they live in urban centers or rural communities,” Schrauder noted. “Our goal is to provide an exceptional shopping experience both online and in-store.”

Looking Ahead

As Walmart Canada embarks on this ambitious expansion journey, it aims not only to grow its footprint but also to enhance its offerings and customer service capabilities.

With a focus on innovation and modernization, Walmart Canada is poised to solidify its position as a leading retailer in the Canadian market.

This bold investment marks a pivotal moment for Walmart Canada, reflecting its long-term vision and commitment to serving Canadian consumers more effectively than ever before.
