What time does the stock market open? A Return to Regular Trading Hours

After the holiday pause, the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and NASDAQ resumed regular trading today, December 27th, marking a return to business as usual following the Christmas festivities.

Both the NYSE and NASDAQ had closed early on Christmas Eve (December 24th), with a shortened trading day that ended at 1:00 PM EST. On Christmas Day (December 25th), the exchanges were closed, in observance of the national holiday.

Today, however, the markets opened at 9:30 AM EST and are set to continue until the usual 4:00 PM EST closing time.

The return to normal trading hours is welcomed by investors and traders who are eager to finish off the final days of the year with critical market moves. While the holiday season generally sees lighter trading volumes, the market is expected to gradually regain momentum as 2024 nears its end.

Market participants are watching key economic indicators and the ongoing trends in global markets, with attention focused on inflation rates, interest rate hikes by the Federal Reserve, and geopolitical tensions that could impact U.S. stock performance in the coming year.

Looking Ahead
As the year-end draws near, there will be a series of important economic reports and corporate earnings updates. Traders are keeping a close eye on these to assess market trends for the first quarter of 2025.

The NYSE and NASDAQ will continue their regular schedules until the New Year’s Day holiday on January 1st, 2025, when the markets will close. The markets will then reopen for regular trading on January 2nd.

Investors are advised to stay informed as the markets gear up for what promises to be a busy start to the new year.
