Skytrax 2025: Cleanliness Becomes a Global Standard as Tokyo, Singapore, and Doha Top Airport Rankings

In an age where hygiene has become a barometer of public trust and operational credibility, airports are under renewed scrutiny—not just for efficiency, but for cleanliness.

The Skytrax World Airport Awards 2025, widely considered the aviation industry’s benchmark of excellence, have named Tokyo Haneda, Singapore Changi, and Doha Hamad International as the world’s cleanest airports.

Tokyo Leads — Again

At the top of the list, Tokyo Haneda Airport retained its position as the cleanest major airport worldwide, continuing a long-standing tradition of precision, order, and cleanliness that mirrors Japan’s cultural values.

Haneda’s dominance in this category underscores the country’s integrated approach to public health, where infrastructure, service, and policy align seamlessly.

Tokyo’s success is no outlier. Japan had two additional airports — New Chitose and Centrair Nagoya — ranked among the cleanest in the under-25 million passengers category, reinforcing a national model where hygiene is not merely expected but institutionalized.

Singapore and Doha Signal Regional Excellence

Coming in second, Singapore Changi Airport continues to set the pace in Asia-Pacific for holistic travel experiences.

Changi’s cleanliness standards are not just a result of manpower, but of systemic investment in automation, frequent inspections, and a culture of accountability.

Its ranking echoes broader national values: in Singapore, sanitation has long been legislated and enforced rigorously.

Doha’s Hamad International Airport, ranked third, represents a different but no less significant trajectory.

The airport’s rapid ascent in Skytrax’s rankings reflects Qatar’s ambitions to position itself as a premium transit hub.

That the airport now rivals long-established Asian counterparts in hygiene metrics is testament to Doha’s infrastructural modernization push, ahead of an increasingly competitive Gulf aviation landscape.

Bahrain Tops Smaller Airports

Skytrax also awarded cleanliness accolades in the sub-25 million passenger category, where Bahrain International Airport ranked first.

The recognition signals a noteworthy shift: smaller airports, with focused investments and streamlined operations, are emerging as quiet leaders in customer service—especially in regions like the Middle East.

Cleanliness as Strategy

While “cleanliness” may sound cosmetic, for airports it is anything but. In the post-pandemic era, it has become an operational imperative. For travelers, a spotless terminal is no longer just pleasant—it signals safety, efficiency, and trustworthiness.

For airport authorities, the hygiene score is increasingly seen as a proxy for larger organizational discipline.

Skytrax’s methodology is grounded in millions of passenger surveys, covering visible metrics—such as restroom cleanliness and floor maintenance—as well as broader perceptions of hygiene and upkeep.

Implications Beyond Terminals

These results have implications beyond the terminal walls. Clean airports often reflect clean cities. In this case, the leading airports align with urban environments already recognized for their orderliness and environmental consciousness.

Tokyo and Singapore regularly rank among the world’s cleanest cities, while Doha is undergoing a calculated reinvention.

In a global economy where travel recovery is accelerating but still uneven, airports that project cleanliness are likely to gain a competitive edge—not just in reputation, but in attracting passengers, airlines, and investment.

Cleanliness is emerging as both a symbol and a strategy in 21st-century air travel. Skytrax’s 2025 rankings highlight not just which airports are cleanest, but which cities and nations are treating hygiene as a pillar of global leadership.
