Party city to shut down all stores after nearly 40 years of business

Party City, the iconic retailer synonymous with celebrations, announced the abrupt closure of all its stores on December 20, 2024.

The decision comes just five days before Christmas, marking a somber end to nearly four decades of business.

CEO Barry Litwin informed employees of the closure, citing financial challenges that the company could no longer overcome.

The retailer had been struggling for years, with mounting pressures from inflation, reduced consumer spending, and growing competition from e-commerce giants like Amazon and Walmart.

Despite efforts to adapt, including emerging from bankruptcy in September 2023 and canceling nearly $1 billion in debt, the company was unable to sustain operations.

“We’ve done everything possible to keep Party City afloat, but the economic environment and shifting consumer habits have made it impossible to continue,” said Litwin in an internal memo.

The announcement leaves approximately 6,400 full-time and 10,100 part-time employees without jobs or severance pay. Benefits are also set to cease immediately. The closure affects over 850 global locations, with stores instructed to shut their doors immediately.

A Legacy of Celebration

Founded in 1986, Party City became the go-to destination for party supplies, balloons, costumes, and seasonal décor. The company’s innovative approach to retail made it a household name, especially during Halloween and other major holidays. However, in recent years, changing consumer preferences and the rise of digital marketplaces put immense pressure on traditional brick-and-mortar retailers.

Struggles Leading to the End

The retailer’s financial troubles have been long-standing. The bankruptcy in 2023 was an attempt to restructure and remain viable. While the process allowed most stores to stay open temporarily, Party City could not overcome its debt burden and operational challenges.

“The retail landscape has fundamentally changed, and our efforts to adapt could not keep pace with the speed of these changes,” Litwin stated.

The abrupt closure of Party City adds to a growing list of retail bankruptcies in 2024, including Big Lots and other household names. Industry experts note that these closures reflect broader economic trends affecting traditional retail.

Impact on Communities and Consumers

The sudden announcement leaves many communities without access to a local party supply store. For consumers, Party City’s closure signals the end of an era, particularly for families and event planners who relied on its wide selection and in-store experiences.

“It’s sad to see such an iconic brand disappear,” said Lisa Bennett, a long-time customer. “Party City was always part of our celebrations, from birthdays to graduations.”

What’s Next for Party City?

While liquidation plans have not been detailed, it is expected that remaining inventory will be sold off in the coming weeks. The company has not indicated whether its online presence will remain operational or if the brand could reemerge in a different form under new ownership.

The closure of Party City serves as a stark reminder of the challenges facing retailers in today’s evolving marketplace. As one chapter closes for the brand, it leaves behind a legacy of joyous occasions it helped create over nearly 40 years.
