The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has officially announced that the 2025 tax filing season will begin on January 27, 2025.
This date marks the opening for taxpayers to start filing their 2024 federal income tax returns. With the standard filing deadline set for April 15, 2025, taxpayers are encouraged to file early to avoid potential delays.
One of the most notable developments this tax season is the expansion of the IRS Direct File program.
Following last year’s pilot program, which was available in 12 states, this initiative has now grown to include 25 states. The program allows taxpayers to file their returns directly with the IRS for free, streamlining the filing process and eliminating the need for third-party software.
The IRS expects to issue most refunds within 21 days of receiving a return. Taxpayers who e-file and opt for direct deposit are likely to see the quickest turnaround. The “Where’s My Refund?” tool on the IRS website will enable taxpayers to check their refund status within 24 hours of filing electronically.
Tracking your refund has never been easier. The IRS provides the “Where’s My Refund?” tool, available on IRS.gov and the IRS2Go mobile app.
To use this feature, taxpayers will need their Social Security number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN), their filing status, and the exact amount of their expected refund.
Refund status is typically updated once a day, making it simple for taxpayers to stay informed throughout the process.
To better serve the public, the IRS has expanded office hours at nearly 250 Taxpayer Assistance Centers nationwide. Special Saturday hours will also be available from February through May to accommodate more taxpayers. These enhancements are part of the IRS’s ongoing efforts to improve accessibility and support.
Tax season often sees a rise in scams targeting unsuspecting taxpayers. The IRS has reminded taxpayers to remain vigilant against phishing attempts, phone scams, and fraudulent emails.
The agency emphasizes that it will never initiate contact via email, text, or social media to request personal or financial information.
With recent tax law changes, including expanded credits and deductions, taxpayers may face added complexity when filing their returns. To address these challenges, the IRS encourages the use of their online resources, including the “Get Ready” page on IRS.gov, which offers tips and updates to help taxpayers prepare.
While federal filing begins on January 27, state filing deadlines and procedures may differ. Taxpayers should verify requirements with their respective state tax agencies to ensure compliance.
The IRS strongly advises taxpayers to file electronically and choose direct deposit for their refunds. Additionally, gathering all necessary documents early—such as W-2s, 1099s, and information on deductions—can help streamline the process.
For those with more complex returns, consulting a tax professional or using IRS Free File tools may be beneficial.
As the 2025 tax season approaches, the IRS continues to roll out initiatives aimed at simplifying the filing process and enhancing taxpayer support.
With new tools, expanded programs, and faster refund processing, taxpayers can look forward to a more efficient experience. For more information and resources, visit IRS.gov.
