Turkey Launches the World’s Longest Wind-Powered Cargo Ship

In a groundbreaking move toward sustainability, Turkey has launched the world’s longest wind-powered cargo ship, the Neoliner Origin.

The impressive 136-meter (450-foot) vessel, which promises to revolutionize the shipping industry, was unveiled at the Turkish port of Tuzla.

The Neoliner Origin, designed by the French company Neoline and constructed by Turkish shipyard RMK Marine, is not only the longest wind-powered cargo ship ever built but also one of the most environmentally friendly.

With two towering masts and 3,000 square meters of sails, the ship is capable of carrying 5,300 tonnes of freight on long voyages while significantly reducing its carbon footprint.

The vessel operates on wind propulsion, allowing it to travel at a speed of 11 knots, cutting its fuel consumption and emissions by up to five times compared to conventional cargo ships.

The technology behind the Neoliner Origin offers a promising solution to reducing the maritime industry’s reliance on fossil fuels, a significant contributor to global carbon emissions.

After a period of outfitting, the Neoliner Origin is set to begin its maiden voyage in the summer of 2025, making its way from Turkey to the French Atlantic port of Saint-Nazaire.

The ship will then begin its service rotation, traveling to North American destinations such as the U.S. port of Baltimore and Canada’s Halifax, as well as the French island of Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon.

The launch of the Neoliner Origin is a historic milestone for Turkey, which continues to position itself as a leader in sustainable shipping solutions.

The vessel marks a significant advancement in the push for green technology within the shipping industry and aligns with global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote cleaner, more efficient transportation.

As the Neoliner Origin embarks on its journey, it sets a powerful example of how the maritime sector can leverage wind power and innovative technologies to protect the environment and contribute to a greener future.
