Ritz Crackers Recalled Nationwide Over Dangerous Labeling Error: Peanut Allergy Warning Issued

Snack food giant Mondelēz Global LLC has issued a voluntary nationwide recall of several Ritz Cracker products due to a potentially life-threatening labeling mistake.

The recall impacts multiple sizes of Ritz Peanut Butter Cracker Sandwiches, which were mistakenly packaged with incorrect labeling, creating a major risk for those allergic to peanuts.

Mislabeled Packs Pose Allergen Threat

According to a statement from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the issue involves a supplier error in which peanut butter-filled cracker sandwiches were mislabeled as “cheese sandwiches” on the individual product packaging.

While the outer cartons correctly identify the peanut butter contents, the inner packs display incorrect allergen information, omitting peanuts entirely.

“No illnesses have been reported to date,” the company noted, but emphasized that “consumers who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to peanuts run the risk of a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products.”

Products Affected

The recall includes four specific Ritz product configurations, all distributed across the United States:

  • Ritz Peanut Butter Sandwich Crackers – 8-Pack Carton

    • UPC: 044000882105

    • Best-by Dates: November 1–9, 2025

    • Plant code: AE

  • Ritz Peanut Butter Sandwich Crackers – 20-Pack Carton

    • UPC: 044000075842

    • Best-by Dates: November 1–9, 2025 and January 2–22, 2026

    • Plant code: AE

  • Ritz Peanut Butter Sandwich Crackers – 40-Pack Carton

    • UPC: 044000078195

    • Best-by Dates: November 1–9, 2025 and January 2–22, 2026

    • Plant code: AM

  • Ritz Cracker Sandwiches Variety Pack – 20-Pack

    • UPC: 044000080952

    • Best-by Dates: November 2–9, 2025

    • Plant code: RJ

Consumers can find the UPC codes and best-by dates on the bottom of the product cartons.

Root Cause: Supplier Packaging Mix-Up

Mondelēz attributed the mistake to a supplier’s packaging roll error, which caused the inner wrappers to display incorrect labels.

The company has stated it is working swiftly to correct the issue and enhance its quality assurance procedures to prevent future incidents.

“This labeling error was isolated and limited to specific batches,” said a spokesperson from Mondelēz. “We have already initiated a corrective response with our suppliers.”

Consumer Action Recommended

Customers who purchased the affected products are urged to check their pantries and take the following steps:

  • Do not consume the product if there is any risk of peanut allergy in the household.

  • Return the product to the place of purchase for a full refund.

  • Contact Mondelēz Consumer Relations at 1-844-366-1171 for more information or assistance. The line is available 24/7, with live representatives available Monday to Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. ET.

Anyone who suspects they or someone they know may have consumed the mislabeled product and is experiencing symptoms such as swelling, difficulty breathing, or hives should seek medical attention immediately.

A Broader Reminder on Food Label Vigilance

This recall highlights the ongoing importance of accurate food labeling, especially for products involving major allergens such as peanuts, dairy, shellfish, and gluten.

According to FDA guidelines, clear allergen labeling is a legal requirement, and mistakes—even rare ones—can have grave consequences.
