Snack food giant Mondelēz Global LLC has issued a voluntary nationwide recall of several Ritz Cracker products due to a potentially life-threatening labeling mistake.
The recall impacts multiple sizes of Ritz Peanut Butter Cracker Sandwiches, which were mistakenly packaged with incorrect labeling, creating a major risk for those allergic to peanuts.
Mislabeled Packs Pose Allergen Threat
According to a statement from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the issue involves a supplier error in which peanut butter-filled cracker sandwiches were mislabeled as “cheese sandwiches” on the individual product packaging.
While the outer cartons correctly identify the peanut butter contents, the inner packs display incorrect allergen information, omitting peanuts entirely.
“No illnesses have been reported to date,” the company noted, but emphasized that “consumers who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to peanuts run the risk of a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products.”

Root Cause: Supplier Packaging Mix-Up
Mondelēz attributed the mistake to a supplier’s packaging roll error, which caused the inner wrappers to display incorrect labels.
The company has stated it is working swiftly to correct the issue and enhance its quality assurance procedures to prevent future incidents.
“This labeling error was isolated and limited to specific batches,” said a spokesperson from Mondelēz. “We have already initiated a corrective response with our suppliers.”
