Record-breaking holiday travel expected at Houston Airports


As the holiday season takes off, Houston’s airports are gearing up for a record-breaking influx of travelers.

Between December 19, 2024, and January 6, 2025, George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) and William P. Hobby Airport (HOU) are expected to welcome an estimated 3.4 million passengers—a 7% increase compared to last year.

What to Expect

George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH):

  • Approximately 2.7 million travelers are expected to pass through IAH, with around 2 million on domestic flights.
  • A newly opened International Arrivals Curb with six dedicated lanes is set to ease congestion, while Terminals A and D have doubled their customer service staff.

William P. Hobby Airport (HOU):

  • Around 755,000 passengers are projected, including 707,000 on domestic flights.
  • Enhanced TSA screening with advanced equipment will speed up security checks, allowing passengers to keep laptops and liquids in carry-ons.
  • New information kiosks on both sides of security will assist passengers in navigating the airport.

The busiest travel days at Houston airports are expected to be:

  • Thursday, December 19: 206,000 passengers
  • Friday, December 20: 207,000 passengers
  • Sunday, December 22: 204,000 passengers
  • Thursday, December 26: 205,000 passengers
  • Sunday, December 29: 201,000 passengers

To ensure a smooth journey, travelers are encouraged to:

  • Reserve Parking: Secure parking spots online at least 12 hours in advance.
