Oxfordshire Travel Disruptions: Major Incidents and Roadworks Cause Chaos

Money & Market

Key Takeaways:

  • A34 near Abingdon remains closed after a serious incident, causing major delays.

  • M40 shut between Junctions 9 and 8A due to a fatal collision, with long queues in both directions.

  • Planned roadworks on Woodstock Road adding further congestion.

  • Drivers advised to check live updates and allow extra travel time.

A34 Abingdon Closure

The A34, a crucial north-south route near Abingdon, has been closed since March 24 following a serious incident.

Police investigations are ongoing, and the closure has led to traffic queues of four miles northbound and two miles southbound. Further delays are expected due to a 24-hour closure of St Helen’s Wharf in Abingdon for utility repairs until March 27.

M40 Fatal Collision

A double-fatal crash between Junctions 9 (Bicester) and 8A (Tiddington) has resulted in a full closure of the M40. Southbound queues extend for four miles, while northbound traffic faces one-mile delays. Authorities anticipate reopening the road later this afternoon.

Planned Works Add Pressure

While unrelated to the closures, scheduled resurfacing and safety improvements on Woodstock Road (March 18–April 2) are causing additional disruption, including lane reversals and changes for pedestrians and cyclists.

Travel Advice

Motorists should monitor real-time traffic updates, follow diversion signs, and plan for extended travel times, especially during peak hours.

Note: The recently completed A34 drainage work near Litchfield (March 24) and the M25 Junction 10–11 closure (March 21–24) are not linked to the current disruptions.
