Ontario Exploring New Nuclear Energy Generation in Port Hope: A Key Step Towards Meeting Future Energy Demands

Ontario is making significant strides towards securing its energy future by exploring new nuclear energy generation at the Wesleyville site near Port Hope.

The provincial government has directed Ontario Power Generation (OPG) to conduct assessments on the feasibility of expanding nuclear power in the region, with the aim of meeting an anticipated 75% increase in energy demand by 2050.

The Wesleyville site, which is already home to vital energy infrastructure, has been identified as a prime location for new electricity generation.

This site is well-equipped with transmission lines, roads, and railways, and is zoned for new energy generation.

According to early evaluations, the Wesleyville site could potentially support up to 10,000 megawatts (MW) of new nuclear capacity—enough to power approximately 10 million homes.

Local communities have expressed strong support for the project. The Municipality of Port Hope’s council passed a unanimous motion on December 17, 2024, endorsing continued engagement with OPG and the Ministry of Energy and Electrification.

The Williams Treaties First Nations (WTFNs) have also shown support for the expansion, with OPG offering them the opportunity for equity participation in any future energy generation project.

The economic benefits of this nuclear expansion could be substantial, creating an estimated 10,500 jobs across Ontario, with 1,700 new positions in Port Hope alone. This job growth represents a 15 to 20 percent increase in local employment.

Furthermore, the Conference Board of Canada forecasts that the project could contribute $235 billion to Ontario’s GDP over the 95-year lifespan of the development, covering design, construction, operation, and maintenance phases.

To support the initiative, the Ontario government has committed $1 million in funding to the Municipality of Port Hope.

This funding will be used for early growth readiness, planning, infrastructure assessments, and public consultation requirements. Additionally, OPG will provide capacity funding to the WTFNs to ensure their full participation in the project’s planning and execution.

The exploration of new nuclear energy generation at Port Hope aligns with Ontario’s broader strategy to enhance its energy infrastructure, focusing on reliable and sustainable energy sources.

As the province continues to grow and energy demand increases, nuclear power is seen as a key component of meeting future needs while contributing to long-term economic and environmental goals.

This initiative is also a step toward ensuring that Ontario remains at the forefront of clean and sustainable energy innovation, balancing the need for increased power generation with environmental responsibility.

As assessments and planning for the project continue, Ontario looks to secure its energy future while also bolstering local economies and creating job opportunities for communities across the province.
