The Port of Mombasa, a critical artery in East Africa’s trade network, is undergoing a historic transformation with a multibillion-shilling modernization project officially launched in January 2025.
This bold initiative marks a pivotal moment for the region, as Kenya reinforces its position as a logistics powerhouse connecting Africa to global markets.
Led by the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA), this ambitious upgrade underscores the government’s commitment to enhancing trade efficiency, job creation, and regional economic growth.
With sweeping infrastructure developments and cutting-edge technology deployments already underway, Mombasa Port is setting the pace for maritime excellence in Africa.
Launched with the backing of both government and private sector stakeholders, the new Mombasa Port modernization project is valued at over Ksh 60 billion (approx. USD 400 million). The project includes:
Expansion of Berths and Container Terminals: Berths 11 to 14 are being upgraded to handle larger vessels and increase container handling capacity. The completion of the Phase III Container Terminal will raise total annual capacity to 2.5 million TEUs, up from the current 1.7 million TEUs.
Introduction of Green Port Initiatives: The upgrade features environmentally sustainable technologies, including energy-efficient cargo handling equipment, better waste management systems, and digital traffic control to reduce emissions and enhance efficiency.
Modern Equipment and Automation: The port has acquired state-of-the-art gantry cranes, terminal tractors, and automation software to improve turnaround time and minimize human error, ensuring cargo is moved faster and more safely.
Improved Port Access Roads: Construction of the Kipevu Road Interchange and ongoing upgrades to the Dongo Kundu Bypass are streamlining cargo movement to and from the port, decongesting the city and enhancing last-mile connectivity to key inland logistics hubs.
During the official launch ceremony in January, President William Ruto emphasized that the modernization project is not just about improving infrastructure—it is about positioning Kenya as the logistics gateway of East and Central Africa.
The enhanced port facilities will serve not only Kenya but also Uganda, Rwanda, South Sudan, the DRC, and northern Tanzania, bolstering intra-African trade under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
“This port upgrade is a bold declaration that Kenya is ready for the future. We are investing in efficiency, sustainability, and innovation to attract more global trade through our gateway,” said President Ruto.
The Mombasa Port upgrade comes at a time when cargo volumes are reaching record highs. In 2024, the port handled over 2 million TEUs and more than 41 million tonnes of cargo—a 14% increase over the previous year.
The new projects aim to ensure that the port not only keeps pace with this growth but stays ahead of demand.
Trade stakeholders have welcomed the developments, citing reduced vessel turnaround times, improved cargo clearance procedures, and better port logistics.
The port’s digitization strategy—integrating Kenya Revenue Authority systems with port clearance processes—has also been praised for cutting red tape and promoting transparency.
The latest modernization push is more than an infrastructure project—it is a national milestone.
It reflects Kenya’s drive to modernize its trade corridors, attract foreign investment, and support local businesses by improving the cost and ease of doing business.
KPA Managing Director Capt. William Ruto noted, b We are not only expanding; we are transforming. The new facilities will make Mombasa a competitive, world-class port capable of handling the logistics needs of tomorrow.”
As global trade continues to evolve, Mombasa Port is ready to meet the challenge. The current modernization projects are expected to be completed in phases through 2026, with continuous upgrades planned in line with international best practices.
