Kazakhstan has unveiled significant progress in its renewable energy sector during the 15th session of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) Assembly, held in Abu Dhabi.
The Central Asian nation’s delegation, led by Zhaslan Kasenov, Director of the Renewable Energy Sources Department at the Ministry of Energy, highlighted recent achievements and ambitious future plans to transform its energy landscape.
In 2024, Kazakhstan achieved a notable expansion in its renewable energy capacity, commissioning 11 new facilities with a combined capacity of 117.35 megawatts (MW).
These projects were part of a broader investment of over $110 million into renewable energy initiatives, underscoring the country’s commitment to sustainable development.
Currently, Kazakhstan boasts 153 renewable energy facilities, which together provide a total capacity of 3,032 MW.
This infrastructure contributes significantly to reducing the nation’s reliance on fossil fuels and advancing its clean energy transition.
Kazakhstan’s government has set ambitious targets to further enhance its renewable energy portfolio. By 2030, the country aims to generate 15% of its total energy from renewable sources, with a longer-term goal of achieving 50% by 2050.
These objectives align with global efforts to combat climate change and meet international sustainability standards.
Addressing the IRENA Assembly, Kasenov emphasized Kazakhstan’s strategic approach to diversifying its energy mix and promoting sustainable practices.
“Our nation is committed to becoming a regional leader in renewable energy,” he stated. “Through strategic investments, global partnerships, and policy reforms, we are paving the way for a greener and more sustainable future.”
Kazakhstan’s participation in the IRENA Assembly reflects its active engagement in global energy discussions and its dedication to fostering international collaboration.
The country’s initiatives serve as a model for other nations transitioning to renewable energy.
As Kazakhstan continues to expand its renewable energy infrastructure, the government’s focus will remain on innovation, efficiency, and sustainability. With its substantial investments and clear vision, Kazakhstan is poised to play a pivotal role in the global renewable energy transition.
The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) is a leading intergovernmental organization that supports countries in their transition to sustainable energy systems.
The annual IRENA Assembly provides a platform for member states to discuss and share advancements in renewable energy development.
