The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has officially announced that the 2025 tax season will begin on January 27, 2025.
With millions of taxpayers preparing to file their returns, the agency expects to receive over 140 million individual tax returns before the filing deadline of April 15, 2025.
As the tax season opens, the IRS is implementing several new initiatives aimed at improving the taxpayer experience. One of the key highlights is the expansion of the IRS Direct File program.
For the first time, the service will be available in 25 states, allowing eligible taxpayers to file their tax returns directly with the IRS at no cost.
This marks a significant increase from 12 states participating in 2024, providing more opportunities for taxpayers to take advantage of the free filing option.
The IRS Free File program also sees an enhancement, with the eligibility threshold raised to an adjusted gross income of $84,000 or less. This means more taxpayers can access free, online tax preparation software, making it easier for them to file their returns accurately and on time.
In addition to these changes, the IRS has made strides to improve customer service and accessibility. Taxpayers can now access tax forms digitally on mobile devices, and virtual assistants are available to assist with common queries, providing a smoother and more efficient filing process.
The IRS also encourages taxpayers to start filing early to avoid delays, particularly since refunds are expected to be issued faster when returns are filed electronically.
For those who are unsure about how to file or need assistance, the IRS website offers resources, including frequently asked questions and detailed information on the filing process.
As the 2025 tax season approaches, taxpayers are urged to take advantage of the new filing options, tools, and resources available to ensure a smooth and timely filing process.
