Google Launches ‘Ask for Me’: AI-Powered Feature to Call Businesses on Your Behalf

Money & Market

Google is taking its artificial intelligence capabilities to the next level with the introduction of “Ask for Me,” a new feature designed to call local businesses on behalf of users to inquire about services, pricing, and availability.

The feature, currently in the experimental phase, is part of Google’s Search Labs initiative and aims to enhance user convenience by eliminating the need for manual phone calls.

How ‘Ask for Me’ Works

Users searching for local services, such as “oil change near me” or “nail salons nearby,” may see an “Ask for Me” option.

This allows them to enter specific details about the service they are looking for. Google’s AI then calls the relevant businesses, gathers the requested information, and provides users with a summary of the responses.

The AI-driven calls begin with an automated announcement stating that it is a Google system calling on behalf of a user. Businesses retain the option to opt out of receiving these automated calls through their Google Business Profile settings or by requesting not to be contacted during an AI-initiated call.

Availability and Initial Rollout

As of now, “Ask for Me” is available only in the United States and supports English-language queries. Access is limited to users who have opted into Google’s Search Labs experiments, and a waitlist is available for those interested in trying the feature.

Building on Duplex Technology

The “Ask for Me” feature builds upon Google’s Duplex technology, first introduced in 2018, which enables AI-powered voice interactions to make reservations and book appointments. However, “Ask for Me” expands the functionality beyond bookings, allowing users to request general service information without making direct calls themselves.

Potential Impact and Future Expansion

This latest AI-driven innovation underscores Google’s commitment to integrating artificial intelligence into everyday services, streamlining interactions between users and businesses. If successful, “Ask for Me” could be expanded to cover a broader range of industries and geographical locations, further redefining how consumers engage with local businesses.

As AI technology continues to evolve, Google’s “Ask for Me” could mark a significant shift in customer-business interactions, making everyday tasks more seamless and efficient.
