First driverless metro in Africa to be built in Egypt

Alstom, global leader in smart and green mobility, has signed a framework agreement with National Authority of Tunnels (NAT), to design, build and maintain the Cairo Metro line 6 at the COP 27.

The construction of Cairo Metro Line 6 is part of Egypt’s plans to increase and improve public transport capacity and passenger experience for citizens. It will be 35 kilometres long and will accommodate around 1.5 million passengers. The line will run north-south through the Greater Cairo neighbourhoods of Shubra El-Kheima and New Maadi, ending at the beginning of Ain El-Sokhna Road, Al-Khosos. The project will also include 26 stations, 12 of which will be located underground. The creation of Cairo Metro Line 6 will reduce the congestion on Cairo Metro Line 1 and provide more options to residents moving across Cairo.

“We are proud of our partnership with National Authority of Tunnels and to be part of the growth and modernisation of Egypt’s urban network. Alstom is further committed to localise a significant portion of the Cairo metro line 6 project, aligned with Egypt’s 2030 vision and sustainable development goals. In 2019, the city’s CO2 emissions due to transport was around 22 million tonnes of CO2 representing 40% of Egypt’s total transport emissions. This agreement, signed during COP27, demonstrates Egypt’s commitment to ensuring Cairo is an inclusive, safe, and resilient city” said Andrew DeLeone, President of Alstom in Africa, Middle East, and Central Asia.

Alstom will provide the rolling stock, the Metropolis, the state-of-the-art metro; it will bring an unprecedented level of comfort to Cairo residents and tourists.  Its interior layout will be tailored to specific customer requirements and designed to maximise the train’s capacity while improving passenger comfort, accessibility and circulation. At peak times, each train will be able to carry 2,580 passengers and its eco-design will improve energy efficiency and will be 98% recyclable.

Alstom will be also in charge of signalling systems, infrastructure, telecom systems, traction, power supply, high voltage substation, depot equipment, design of the depot, trackwork, third rail and automatic fare collection. Alstom will be also responsible for the maintenance work on Cairo Line 6 will be carried out at the depot in Cairo and managed locally, creating long-term job opportunities for local talent. Additional localization beyond maintenance will open new opportunities for Egyptians to participate in the industry growth.

As a global leader in smart and sustainable mobility, Alstom participated at COP27 to showcase the progress and opportunities available to decarbonize the transport sector, as well as exchange on green transport solutions for the future. Alstom has over 20 years of expertise in low carbon technology, and has been participating in the conference since COP21 in Paris.
