Egg Prices Skyrocket Amid Bird Flu Outbreak, Leaving Consumers Scrambling

Consumers across the United States are feeling the pinch as egg prices continue to soar, driven primarily by a severe outbreak of bird flu that has decimated poultry populations.

As of February 2, 2025, the average price for a dozen eggs has surged by 50% over the past year, with significant increases noted since late 2024.

Current Price Surge

The average price for a dozen eggs recently hit $5.29, up from just above $3.50 a year ago. This marks a staggering increase from $2.51 in late 2023 and reflects broader inflationary trends affecting food prices nationwide

. Experts predict prices may rise an additional 20% throughout the year, particularly as demand spikes ahead of the Easter holiday.

Causes Behind the Increase

The primary driver of these escalating prices is the ongoing outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), specifically the H5N1 strain.

This virus has led to the culling of over 13 million hens in December alone, significantly reducing egg supplies. Since the outbreak began, millions of birds have been lost, creating a persistent supply crunch that has left many consumers facing empty shelves in grocery stores.

Consumer Impact

Shoppers are expressing frustration as they encounter rising prices and limited availability. Reports indicate that some stores are imposing purchase limits on eggs to manage dwindling supplies.

In certain regions, consumers are paying more than double the average price for eggs, with organic and cage-free options fetching even higher prices.

One Minneapolis resident lamented, “It’s just robbery… Eggs used to be a staple for us, but now you might as well dine out.”

Looking Ahead

Experts warn that without significant improvements in poultry health and supply chain logistics, high egg prices may persist throughout 2025.

The combination of bird flu outbreaks and a shortage of truck drivers complicates distribution efforts, further contributing to price increases.

As consumers brace for continued volatility in egg prices, many are left wondering when relief will finally arrive.

The soaring cost of eggs reflects a complex interplay of disease management in poultry farming and heightened consumer demand, leaving many shoppers frustrated and financially strained as they navigate this unprecedented market situation.
