Throughout March, Consumers Energy is reaching out directly to select senior customers through its Senior Check-in program.
This initiative allows seniors to review their accounts and receive personalized payment assistance options. By calling 888-535-9280, seniors can connect with representatives who will guide them through available resources to regain control over their energy bills.
Consumers Energy offers several programs tailored to meet the needs of senior citizens, including:
Winter Protection Plan (WPP): Protects seniors from service shut-offs during the winter months while allowing partial payments on energy bills. From November through March, participants pay 7% of their estimated annual bill plus a portion of past-due balances. Reconciliation occurs in April, with adjusted payments continuing through October.
Electric Senior Citizen Credit: Provides a $4 monthly credit on electric bills for eligible seniors, helping those on fixed incomes manage costs more effectively.
Shut-Off Protection Plan (SPP): Offers year-round protection from service disconnection by spreading annual energy costs into equal monthly payments. A down payment is required to enroll.
Beyond financial assistance, Consumers Energy emphasizes energy-saving strategies to help reduce costs. For example, heating accounts for approximately 30% of a household’s energy bill, with water heaters contributing another 15%.
The company encourages seniors to adopt energy-efficient practices and explore programs like Helping Neighbors, which provides free home assessments and upgrades for income-qualified households.
Consumers Energy also offers programs like the Consumers Affordable Resource for Energy (CARE), a 24-month affordable payment plan designed for income-qualified customers.
This program includes bill credits and gradual forgiveness of past-due balances.
For those facing medical emergencies or requiring life-support equipment, additional protections are available to prevent service interruptions.
