Avanti West Coast Faces Major Disruption as Staff Strike Over Rest-Day Working

Avanti West Coast is set to face major operational disruptions over the next several months as its train managers, represented by the National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT), embark on a strike action.

The strike, which began on January 12, 2025, will see staff walking out every Sunday until May 25, 2025.

The RMT has called for the strike due to a dispute over pay for employees who are required to work on their scheduled rest days.

According to the union, the strike is a response to ongoing negotiations with Avanti West Coast, with workers demanding better compensation for the additional hours spent away from their families and personal time.

As a result, Avanti West Coast will operate a significantly reduced timetable on the strike days. Passengers traveling on Sundays between January and May are urged to check train schedules in advance to avoid disruptions. Those affected by the strike may seek full refunds for their tickets.

Union leaders have emphasized that this action is a last resort after months of unsuccessful talks. They argue that staff members who play a vital role in ensuring the smooth operation of the West Coast mainline deserve fair compensation for working during their rest days.

In response to the strike, Avanti West Coast has assured passengers that they are doing everything possible to minimize the impact of the disruptions.

The train operator has outlined alternative travel options and reminded passengers of their right to a refund.

The ongoing industrial action has sparked debates about the working conditions of train staff and the broader issue of pay disputes across the UK railway industry.

Passengers are advised to stay updated by checking Avanti West Coast’s official website or social media channels for real-time information regarding service changes and alternative travel arrangements.

For more information on affected services, passengers can visit Avanti West Coast’s official strike update page.
