Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport grapples with long lines amid staff shortage

[divider style=”solid” top=”25″ bottom=”25″][dropcap]O[/dropcap]ne of Europe’s busiest airports Schipol Airport continues to witness long queues resulting in travel chaos and airport managers have asked airlines to cancel flights at the Amsterdam airport amid staff shortages.

The airport witnessed a surge of passengers following the lifting of Covid-19 restrictions but staff shortage has resulted to long lines in recent weeks.

The Airport is now advising travelers to show up at the airport with as little baggage as possible. “If you travel with checked baggage, it’s helpful if you put all of your hand baggage belongings in there. We also ask you to only bring one piece of baggage with you and to leave your carry-on at home.”

And on Thursday, Schiphol set a cap on the number of passengers it can handle per day. The airport said it would accept around 70,000 passengers a day, about 16% – or 13,500 seats per day – fewer than airlines had planned.

The limit in capacity means that a number of carriers will have to fly with empty seats or axe their daily flights to Amsterdam in order to comply with the new requirement.

KLM says it will hold Schiphol responsible for the financial impact of these measures.

But Schiphol says the measures are necessary to keep the situation manageable and safe for passengers and staff during the summer peak (6 July through 28 August).
