Port of Richard Bay gets 20MW solar PV plant

Amulet Group Consortium has been picked as the preferred bidder to construct and operate a 20MW solar photovoltaics plant at south Africa’s Port of Richards Bay.

Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) hopes that the project will begin this month and will be operational by May 2026.

The project is part of Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA  plans to install about 100 MW of renewable energy across South Africa’s eight commercial seaports.

TNPA also sees the projects as an opportunity to reduce of carbon emissions and greenhouse gas emissions from coal-generated electricity.

“The introduction of a renewable energy solution in the port system will enable the reduction of carbon emissions and greenhouse gas emissions from coal-generated electricity,” said Moshe Motlohi, managing director.

“It will further provide a cost-effective and reliable energy supply to the port and its users,” he added.
