Construction has started in earnest on a major vaccine manufacturing plant in Ethiopia, which Health Minister, Lia Tadesse says will significant improve vaccine supply chain across the region.
The vaccine manufacturing company, with an investment of over 70 million U.S. dollars, is being built inside the premises of Ethiopia’s Chinese-built Kilinto Industrial Park on the outskirts of the capital, Addis Ababa, the state-affiliated Fana Broadcasting Corporate reported.
ShieldVax Enterprise Project as it is being called was established by the Council of Ministers in July 2023 with a view to building a strong health system in Ethiopia.
After the Covid-19 pandemic, developing local vaccine manufacturing capacity become one of Ethiopia’s top priorities.
Ethiopia’s Chinese-built Kilinto Industrial Park, constructed by Tiesiju Civil Engineering Group Co., Ltd. at a cost of 204 million dollars and specializing in the pharmaceutical sector, is one of the 12 industrial parks and one free trade zone across the country.
