London Silvertown Tunnel Toll Charges: What Drivers Need to Know

As London prepares for the highly anticipated opening of the Silvertown Tunnel in April 2025, new toll charges are set to take effect, impacting drivers who use both the newly constructed tunnel and the nearby Blackwall Tunnel.

This long-awaited infrastructure project promises to ease congestion and improve traffic flow across the River Thames, but motorists will now face tolls when passing through the tunnels.

Toll Charges Breakdown

The toll charges will vary based on the time of day, with peak periods incurring higher fees. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Peak Hours (Weekdays)
    • Northbound (6:00 AM to 10:00 AM): £4
    • Southbound (4:00 PM to 7:00 PM): £4
  • Off-Peak Hours (Weekdays and Weekends)
    • All other times: £1.50
  • Overnight (10:00 PM to 6:00 AM)
    • No charge

These tolls apply to cars and small vans. For larger vehicles such as heavy goods vehicles, charges will be higher, with fees reaching £10 during peak times and £5 during off-peak hours.

How to Save on Tolls

To save money, drivers can register for Transport for London’s (TfL) Auto Pay system. This allows motorists to access the lower off-peak rate of £1.50, as opposed to the £4 standard toll. Without registration, the peak charge will apply all day, even during off-peak hours.

Exemptions and Discounts

The new tolls won’t apply to everyone. Taxis, blue badge holders, and zero-emission vehicles, such as electric cars, will be exempt from toll charges. Additionally, low-income drivers in certain London boroughs will receive discounted rates.

Aiming for Sustainability and Efficiency

The introduction of tolls is not just about raising revenue. The primary goal is to manage traffic congestion in one of the busiest parts of London, while also ensuring that the tunnel’s construction and maintenance are funded sustainably.

The toll charges will help cover the long-term upkeep of this vital infrastructure.

As the date for the tunnel’s opening approaches, London’s drivers are urged to familiarize themselves with the toll structure to avoid unexpected charges.

With over 100,000 vehicles expected to use the tunnels daily, the Silvertown Tunnel promises to play a crucial role in improving travel across the River Thames.

However, as with any new development, it’s clear that drivers will need to adjust to the new tolls to make the most of this exciting new infrastructure.
