Shoprite Sixty60 Expands Across South Africa: Revolutionizing Grocery Delivery

South Africa’s largest retailer, Shoprite, is making significant strides in expanding its on-demand grocery delivery service, Sixty60. The move is set to enhance convenience and accessibility for millions of consumers nationwide.

After a successful pilot phase in Gauteng and the Western Cape, Shoprite is rolling out its Sixty60 service to 19 additional stores across eight provinces.

This strategic expansion will bring ultra-fast grocery delivery to more South Africans, aligning with the growing demand for e-commerce solutions in the retail sector.

The rollout has already begun, with Shoprite Atlantis in the Western Cape and Shoprite Jabulani in Soweto, Gauteng, among the first stores to offer the service. More locations, including Shoprite Kleinmond in the Western Cape and Shoprite Kriel in Mpumalanga, will follow in the coming weeks.

Why This Expansion Matters

The introduction of Sixty60 to new regions marks a turning point in South Africa’s grocery retail industry. The service enables customers to shop for groceries online and receive their orders within 60 minutes—at the same prices as in-store.

Customers also benefit from instant Xtra Savings rewards, making it a cost-effective and time-saving alternative to traditional shopping.

With more consumers embracing online shopping, this expansion places Shoprite in direct competition with other delivery services while reinforcing its leadership in the grocery sector.

Checkers Enhances Online Shopping Accessibility

In a complementary move, Checkers, another brand under the Shoprite Group, has launched a new e-commerce website to make online grocery shopping more accessible.

The website allows customers to place orders using their preferred browser on any device, further democratizing access to digital shopping for millions.

Challenges in the Sixty60 Delivery Network

Despite its rapid success, Sixty60 faces operational challenges, particularly regarding driver retention. Pingo, the logistics arm behind Sixty60, has reported that only 23% of its 7,000 delivery drivers are South African.

Furthermore, nearly 80% of new recruits leave the program before completing training. In response, Pingo has established five driver training centers across South Africa to improve working conditions and retain local talent.
