In a major development for the powersports industry, Arctic Cat, a subsidiary of Textron, has announced that it will cease operations at its Thief River Falls, Minnesota, facility by mid-2025.

This move comes as part of the company’s ongoing efforts to adapt to changes in consumer demand and market dynamics within the powersports sector.

Textron, which acquired Arctic Cat in 2017, revealed that the cessation of snowmobile production at the Thief River Falls plant will take place after the model year 2025 snowmobile lineup is completed.

As part of the decision, production at the St. Cloud, Minnesota, facility will also be paused. The announcement marks the end of an era for the iconic brand, which has operated in Thief River Falls for decades, producing renowned snowmobiles and other outdoor vehicles.

The company attributed the decision to various factors, including a decline in consumer demand for some of Arctic Cat’s traditional offerings. The powersports industry has been facing challenges in recent years, with shifting consumer preferences and changing market conditions contributing to lower sales.

Impact on Employees

Arctic Cat has assured employees that those who remain through the transition will be offered severance benefits.

The company will work closely with local workforce agencies to assist affected workers in securing new employment opportunities. While the closure is a difficult decision, Textron has emphasized that the company remains committed to the powersports industry and will explore other strategic alternatives for the business.

“This decision was not made lightly,” said a Textron spokesperson. “Arctic Cat has a long and proud legacy in Minnesota, and we are dedicated to supporting our employees through this transition.”

Looking Ahead

As the Thief River Falls facility prepares for its closure, Textron has signaled plans to reassess its overall business strategy.

The company is exploring new avenues for Arctic Cat’s future, including strategic partnerships and potential new product innovations. Textron’s focus remains on advancing its powersports portfolio and ensuring that Arctic Cat’s next chapter aligns with evolving market trends.

Despite the closure, Arctic Cat remains one of the most recognized names in the powersports world, with a rich history of designing cutting-edge snowmobiles, ATVs, and side-by-side vehicles.

As the industry adapts to modern trends, Arctic Cat’s role in shaping the future of powersports technology is likely to continue, though in a different form.

The closure of the Thief River Falls facility will have a significant impact on the local economy, as the plant has been a major employer in the region. Local leaders have expressed concern about the potential job losses but have pledged to support workers during the transition.

End of an Era in Thief River Falls

As Arctic Cat’s operations in Thief River Falls wind down, the community and powersports enthusiasts alike will reflect on the company’s legacy. Arctic Cat has been a staple of the region for decades, known for innovation and its contribution to the local economy. While the closure marks a difficult chapter, it also signals a shift in how the company will navigate the evolving landscape of the powersports industry.

Textron’s commitment to Arctic Cat’s future will be crucial in determining the direction the company takes in the coming years, as it works to redefine its role in the marketplace.

The transition period is expected to be challenging, but Arctic Cat’s loyal customer base and the company’s long history could help guide it through this moment of change.
