Ford Recalls Nearly 150,000 Bronco SUVs Over Rear Shock Absorber DefectsFord Motor Company has issued a recall for 149,449 Bronco SUVs due to a serious issue with the rear shock absorbers that could pose safety risks.

The recall involves 2021-2024 Bronco Badlands models and those equipped with the Sasquatch off-road package, both featuring long flange rear shocks prone to corrosion.

The Problem

The defect stems from corrosion occurring between the external reservoir, mounting flange, and damper body of the rear shock absorbers. Over time, this corrosion can weaken the welds holding the external reservoir in place, potentially causing it to detach.

If the reservoir separates, it could create hazardous debris on the road and impair the vehicle’s suspension system, resulting in fluid leaks and a bouncy or unstable ride.

The issue is more likely to affect vehicles exposed to harsh winter conditions where road salt accelerates corrosion. Ford estimates that approximately 30% of the recalled vehicles may exhibit this defect.

Investigation and Reports

The issue first came to light in October 2024 when the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) received four complaints about shock absorber failures, including three cases of reservoir detachment.

Ford’s investigation confirmed that vehicles with long flange shock absorbers were more susceptible to corrosion compared to newer short flange designs introduced in mid-2024 production runs.

As of December 11, 2024, Ford had received 551 warranty claims, one field report, and two customer complaints related to this issue. Fortunately, no accidents or injuries have been reported.

Affected Vehicles

The recall applies to:

  • Model Years: 2021-2024
  • Manufacturing Dates: September 23, 2020 – July 23, 2024
  • Configurations: Two-door and four-door Broncos with Badlands trim or Sasquatch package

Next Steps for Owners

Ford began notifying owners on February 3, 2025, with further instructions expected once a remedy is finalized. Currently, there is no immediate fix available as Ford continues to develop a solution. Affected owners are advised to monitor their vehicles for symptoms such as:

  • Excessive bouncing or instability
  • Unusual noises from the rear suspension
  • Fluid leaks near the rear wheels

Owners who have already paid for repairs related to this issue may be eligible for reimbursement once the remedy is implemented.
