City Power urges Johannesburg Residents to use Electricity Sparingly Amid Ongoing Power Struggles

City Power has issued a fresh warning to Johannesburg residents, urging them to use electricity sparingly in light of ongoing challenges with the city’s power supply.

The utility has cautioned that unless energy consumption is reduced, the introduction of load reduction measures may be necessary to avoid grid overload.

In recent days, the city has faced multiple power issues, compounded by factors such as heavy rainfall, cable theft, and widespread vandalism.

These have led to power outages in several areas, with City Power reporting over 3,000 active outage calls. Despite efforts to restore power, many residents have experienced prolonged outages, particularly in areas where underground tunnels have been flooded, delaying repair operations.

To manage the situation, City Power had temporarily suspended load reduction measures from December 20, 2024, through the end of January 2025.

However, the utility has warned that if power consumption spikes significantly, load reduction could be reintroduced at short notice. The aim is to stabilize the power system and prevent complete grid failure.

City Power is calling on residents to play an active role in reducing their electricity consumption to alleviate pressure on the city’s infrastructure. The appeal comes as repair work continues across the city, with teams working tirelessly to restore power and prevent further damage.

The electricity utility has also noted that the ongoing rainy season has posed significant challenges for repair teams, as the flooded tunnels make it difficult to access certain areas and expedite the restoration process.

Johannesburg residents are encouraged to be mindful of their energy usage by turning off unnecessary appliances, using energy-efficient lighting, and avoiding high electricity-demand activities during peak hours. City Power urges cooperation to ensure a stable power supply for the entire city.

In the coming weeks, authorities will monitor the situation closely and provide updates on any potential changes to load reduction schedules. For now, the utility continues to focus on restoring power and securing long-term solutions to avoid future disruptions.

Residents are advised to stay updated by following City Power’s official channels for real-time outage reports and energy-saving tips.
